Welcome to Confirmation
In your grandparent's church confirmation was the process through which teens learned about God and joined the church. It was pretty much expected that teens would join the church their parents attended. Today we do not assume that those participating in confirmation will necessarily join the church. Although, in order to join the church before you are an adult, you must complete the confirmation experience. The point of confirmation is for you to explore why it is that people bother with religion and to be able to articulate the place it has in your life. What do you believe, why do you believe it, and what difference does it make in your life? What are your convictions and how do they help you craft a life that is an authentic expression of who you are? If, in the end, you decide to join the church we will celebrate with you. If you decide not to join the church we will still welcome you to all church events.
This resource will be updated every year. We will even be making changes and updates along the way. If you come across a particularly good resource elsewhere, please let us know!
Over the course of your confirmation experience you will explore the resources on this website and attend confirmation meetings. We will meet together monthly on a Wednesday evening. You will also meet one on one with your confirmation partner. If you miss a meeting, please get together with your mentor to discuss the topic for the week. Watch the confirmation calendar for meetings and events.
You will receive a journal to keep notes in. Many of the pages on this website ask you to take notes. When you take notes, write down the date and the exersize in your journal. Bring the journal with you to meetings so that we can compare experiences.
Between each time you meet, please read or listen to one chapter of the Gospel of Mark. You can use your own bible, or click on the "Gospel of Mark" page under "Why Christianity" in the directory on the left. Take notes in your journal about anything that surprises or interests you. Along the way, also choose one of the other faith traditions and read or listen to one of their sacred texts. What is similar and what is different to the Gospel of Mark?
Please note that while we are exploring other religions as part of our confirmation process, these resources are curated from a primarily Christian perspective, as that is the perspective of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Moorhead. The first topic we will explore is "Why Religion?" Please go to that page and explore those resources now.
